Every quantum computing platform today trades stability against scalability: qubits either hold their quantum state or scale in numbers, so far not both to tackle large problems. We work on the issues at the root — in the material the qubit is to be made from.
Nano-scale gold, engineered two ways
Gold has a rare combination of properties for quantum information — exceptional chemical stability, some of the strongest spin–orbit coupling of any element, and unusual states. Our sponsored research pursues routes to putting them to work: arranging gold in engineered layers to build circuits with coherence engineered by topology (electrical), and engineering atomically precise gold clusters whose spin properties are tuned by chemistry (optical). Both programmes are at the research stage — and that's the point: we're building IP at the foundation of the field.

Two independent programmes, two leading scientists
Two independent programmes of equal standing, two leading scientists: an electrical route at the University of Toronto led by Prof. Harry Ruda (3-year agreement), and an optical route at Penn State led by Prof. Kenneth Knappenberger (6-year agreement). Delta funds both programmes and holds the rights to exclusive global licences over the resulting IP.
